Method concept and applications

Melatonin is notable for being a neurohormone produced mainly in the dark by the pineal gland. With its rhythmicity, it displays systemic action in diverse physiological and pathological processes, by presenting receptors in brain and spinal cord level and for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and others actions. It is possible that part of melatonin effects is explained by the neuromodulatory action that can modify mechanisms of neuroplasticity. It is known that part of its effect is mediated by neurobiological systems intrinsically related to the processing of nociceptive signaling and implicated in the mechanisms of neuroplasticity as serotonergic, GABAergic and opiódérgico. Furthermore, melatonin has potent anti-inflammatory effects possibly mediated by neuroimmune regulation attenuating important pathway implicated in the onset and maintenance of neuroplasticity maldaptative process that contributes to chronic pain. Our research group has been studied the effect of melatonin in pain and inflammation. At the moment, we study the melatonin combined with tDCS effect on pain threshold, cortical excitability and serum biomarkers.
